WhatShouldWeWatch is built anonymous-first: you can use everything — picks, watchlist, history, ratings — without telling us who you are. Here's exactly what is stored, and where.

Data that lives only in your browser

Your watchlist, the films you've marked as seen, your star ratings, and your re-roll history are saved in your browser's local storage (under keys starting with wsiw:v1:). They never leave your device unless you create an account and choose to sync. You can wipe the lot at any time with “Clear my local data” on your Profile page.

Anonymous usage events

To learn whether the recommender is actually working, the site sends a small anonymous event when a pick is shown, accepted, re-rolled, or marked as seen. Each event records only the event type, the mood you picked, and whether it was a film or a series. We also count page views: the page's address on this site and, when you arrive from elsewhere, the referring site's domain (never the full link). Events within one browser tab share a random id that disappears when the tab closes. No names, no email addresses, and no IP addresses are stored with any of these events, and they can't be linked back to you.

Account data — only if you create one

Accounts are optional and exist purely to sync your lists across devices and let you post public reviews. If you create one, we store your email address, a display name, and your password — the password only as a salted scrypt hash, never in a readable form. A single session cookie keeps you signed in. That's the whole list; you have the right to have your account and everything attached to it deleted at any time.

No third-party tracking

There are no third-party analytics scripts, no advertising trackers, and no tracking cookies on this site. We don't sell or share any data with anyone.

Where the data comes from

Film and series information comes from TMDB, and streaming availability from JustWatch via TMDB. Looking a title up happens on our server — those services don't learn who you are.
